I had the pleasure of returning to my highschool, Savannah Christian Preparatory School, this past week and was glad to see many of the same faces on staff that I remember from 1990. Mrs. Webb was still at the front desk with her pleasant smile and was kind enough to take me around to see all of my highschool teachers. We saw Mrs. Rowland who was the most exciting math teacher that I ever had, because of her great sense of humor and her ability to convey mathematic principles in a down to earth way. We saw Mrs. Welch who was responsible for turning me on to many great classic writers in her literature classes my junior and senior years in highschool. We also visited my highschool football coach, Mr. Kelly, who is principle now and was responsible for teaching me many virtues and values on his excellent football team, The Savannah Christian Raiders! We stopped by Mrs. Brown’s Bible class, which was always one of my favorite classes at SCP, and I was glad to see that she looks like he hasn’t aged a day since last I saw her. We also caught Coach Carter walking down the hall, and I was glad to see he was still keeping the kids as well as himself in great shape! Last of all we saw Dana Goodman, who was absolutely my favorite teacher ever and who helped me throughout my highschool years by helping me to refine my writing skills and giving me advice on the issues of life. She also turned me on to the unique fantasy story, “The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever,” which is an amazing adult fantasy that I thoroughly enjoyed in highschool and college. Mrs. Goodman has asked me to speak at her AP English class on the 19th of May and I’m really looking forward to it!
Most of my other teachers had left for other horizons, including my senior English and aesthetics teacher, Mr. Weeks. I was happy to learn that he’d moved on to teach at Armstrong State College. A few years back I did an article on him after reading his fascinating book, “Life in the Time of Peter Tondee,” which was about the life of Mr. Week’s ancestor who owned the bar in Savannah where the the Sons of Liberty planned the American Revolution. I’ll have to stop by AASU sometime and give a knock on his door!
Well, The Other Side of Yore is now available to students of SCPS through the lower school library, so to any students from my alma mater, hope you enjoy the book!
