Lotsa Yore Stuff On Yore Browser!!
Well I’ve been busy like a beaver this week and just now got time to peak up into my dam and scrawl out a quick blog post.
I’m designing a slew of traditional beaded shaker-style kitchens for a new subdivision in Richmond Hill, as well as a couple of custom kitchens for two beautiful new homes on Wilmington Island, so that has kept me pretty wrapped up.
I did get the time to read a couple of chapters of “Mossflower” on my lunch breaks and at bedtime, and now that I’m near the end I find I have fallen in love with the world that Brian Jaques created and all of its wonderful creatures and characters. I can’t wait to read “Redwall” to Alden. If you don’t know about the “Redwall” series, I can tell you that it’s an extremely well-written tales about the animorphic creatures who inhabit the world around Redwall Abbey. The book I’m reading, “Mossflower,” is about one of Redwall’s greatest heroes (a mouse named Martin) and how he and his friends went on a long and dangerous adventure to liberate a place called Kotir from an evil wildcat queen. I checked out “Mossflower” because several of my readers noted the similarities between Jaques’ world and mine, and I wanted to see what they were talking about.
Like the characters in “Yore,” those in the Redwall series are animorphs, and the setting in both worlds are both medieval and fantastic. Also, Jaques likes to incorporate poems into the tales just like I do. But there are also significant differences; in “Yore” amphibians and to some extent reptiles are the primary characters, while rodents have a secondary role, whereas in “Redwall” the rodents and small mammals are primary characters and if amphibians or reptiles are mentioned they take on a secondary role. Also, there is no evidence of humans in the Redwall series and all technology was created originally by the animals themselves, whereas in “Yore” the “Giants” are gone but not forgotten, and much of the amphibians’ technology comes from scavenged bits of leftover human products.
As for updates on happenings concerning “The Other Side of Yore,” I’ll be speaking about the book and my writing career tomorrow at my almamata, Savannah Christian Preparatory School, in my highschool English teacher’s AP English class. The teacher’s name is Mrs. Goodman and she was a great influence on my love of literature when I was a bit younger.
Alden’s game got rained out today so no baseball tonight, but whether they actually reschedule it or go straight the play-offs I know we have at least a few more games to go in the season. Alden’s last day of school is tomorrow and he can barely contain his excitement; we’ll be heading to Florida for his first trip to Disney soon!
I want to conclude this blog post by thanking everyone who bought a copy of “The Other Side of Yore” during the two “Be Kind To Animals Weeks” and by so doing helped to raise money for www.AmphibianArk.org. Please send in those receipts so that we can count them for the donations!
Speaking of being kind to animals, our two kitties Juni B. and Jimi B. got all of their shots and vaccinations last week and are now happy as kitties should be! They’re wrestling each other and chasing tails around the house even as I write this.
Also, I’d like to announce that next month we will be donating %100 of artists/author royalties to www.AmphibianArk.org for ONE DAY ONLY; Earth Day!
If you purchase the book within the 24 hours of Earth Day and send us the receipt for confirmation, we will donate ALL of our profits to this important cause!
More about the event will be posted later; please contact frawg@theothersideofyore.com for send-in instructions and other details!
That’s all for now-
May yore hops be ever long and high!
